Daily report #94

What's for dinner.
Every little ocean wanderer has of course published a recipe book in his blog. After all, it is quite an art, used to a stocked supermarket around the corner, to do shopping for more than a month (you never know) and then to prepare healthy and sometimes beautiful dishes with it. You would like to inform the world about these gems. We don't have that. And yet it is of course nice for the followers to know what those two lads are up to at sea.
Well look, we've been on the water for a week since St Helena and three weeks since Cape Town. This means that fresh food supplies are running out. There was a food shortage on St Helena so besides some cabbage, cabbage and cabbage, carrots and carrots we were able to get our hands on some broccoli and some fresh tomatoes from the island and oh yes, an iceberg lettuce. But that was it. Because there were cows walking around, but all without udders, unfortunately no dairy products. They didn't eat any cheese on St Helena and what we had was almost gone. Fortunately, we still have some stock of long-life milk. (“A day without a cow is a day wasted” Ton Bakker Indian Ocean 2023) The chickens ubiquitous on the island were apparently unable to lay their eggs in a box, so no eggs either. But hey, here the VEGAN egg replacement powder, purchased in Darwin, offers a solution. You can't make an omelet with it, but the pancakes are great. And Ton was craving pancakes yesterday! Because the mold took a lead on grated cheese, I dusted off an old recipe from home. A savory mushroom sauce.
By popular request, the recipe for the savory sauce.

- A bowl of dried mushrooms.
- A little broth
- Tablespoon of flour to make a rod
- A little butter or margarine
- Dash of milk
- Outing

Soak the mushrooms in a little warm water (keep the liquid)
Chop the onion and fry the onion together with the soaked mushrooms in a saucepan.
Place the mixture in a bowl and set it aside.
Make a little stir in the pan and add the soaking liquid from the mushrooms.
Add some stock and some pepper or other herbs to taste.
Add the fried onions and mushrooms and make the sauce nice and thick with a little milk.
Eh voilá a delicious savory sauce for the pancakes.

If you're not wandering an ocean, have mushrooms. That's a lot cheaper :-)
Next time, 'what do fish think of canned Brussels sprouts?'

Enjoy your meal!
